Walk into a dispensary and someone will ask you "indica, sativa, or hybrid?" Pick one and you'll get pointed at a wall of strain names. Most of them won't mean anything to you. Here's how to cut through it.
why "indica vs sativa" is barely useful anymore
The traditional shorthand says indica = relaxing, sativa = energizing, hybrid = somewhere between. It's a useful starting point but it's also mostly marketing at this point. Modern cannabis genetics are so crossbred that the chemical profile (cannabinoid + terpene mix) tells you a lot more about how a strain will hit than the indica/sativa label does.
The real driver of how a strain feels and tastes is its terpene profile.
what terpenes actually are
Terpenes are aromatic oils produced by cannabis (and most other plants — they're what make lemons smell like lemons and pine trees smell like pine). Cannabis has dozens of terpenes; a handful do most of the work.
When you smell a strain in a jar and it hits you with citrus, that's terpenes. When the smoke tastes a certain way, that's terpenes. When two strains with the same THC% hit completely differently, the terpene profile is usually why.
the 6 terpenes worth knowing
If you remember just these six, you can read most strain profiles:
myrcene · earthy, sweet, herbal
The most common cannabis terpene. Also found in mango, hops, and lemongrass. Tends to feel heavy and relaxing. Strains heavy in myrcene are often called "couch-lock" strains. If you see: mango, herbal, sweet earth.
limonene · citrus, lemon, orange
Smells like citrus peel because it literally is what makes citrus peel smell. Tends to feel uplifting and mood-brightening. If you see: bright, citrus, "lemon," "sour" anything.
pinene · pine, sharp, fresh
Smells like a Christmas tree. Tends to feel clear-headed and focused. Some people report it counteracts the foggy feeling of high-myrcene strains. If you see: sharp, piney, "OG" strains.
caryophyllene · pepper, spice, woody
The terpene that smells like black pepper or clove. Tends to feel calming without being sleepy. If you see: spicy, peppery, "gas" or "diesel" anything.
linalool · floral, lavender
Same compound that makes lavender smell like lavender. Tends to feel soothing and relaxing. Less common but distinctive. If you see: floral, lavender, soft.
terpinolene · herbal, woody, fruity
Complex, hard to pin down — usually combined with other terpenes. Tends to feel uplifting. Found in a lot of "Jack" and "Dream" strains. If you see: Jack Herer, Cali Dream, Dutch Treat.
how to use this in the dispensary
You don't have to memorize the chemistry. Three quick filters:
1. Smell first if you can. If the dispensary lets you smell the jar, do it. Your nose tells you more than the label does. If the smell doesn't appeal to you, the smoke probably won't either.
2. Read the descriptive words on the package. A lot of brands (us included) write strain descriptions that hint at the terpene profile. "Bright citrus" = limonene. "Earthy and herbal" = myrcene. "Sharp pine" = pinene. "Sweet floral" = linalool.
3. Match the terpene to the moment. Want energy? Limonene-forward, pinene-forward, terpinolene. Want to wind down? Myrcene, linalool. Want focused-but-not-zooming? Pinene + caryophyllene.

tldr
Pick by terpene profile, not just indica/sativa. Trust your nose. Match the strain to the moment, not the THC%.
